Since melatonin plays an important role in regulating circadian rhythm, taking the hormone in small doses can reduce the symptoms of seasonal depression - drowsiness, meteosensitivity, depressed mood, irritability, decreased appetite, or vice versa, excessive cravings for starchy foods and sweets.

To increase the level of growth hormone

Growth hormone (HGH) transports certain amino acids into cells, accelerates protein synthesis, influences fat metabolism and maintains fluid balance. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition caused by the backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, which causes heartburn, nausea, and belching. Taking melatonin alone or together with omeprazole, the standard medicine for treating GERD, relieves heartburn and stomach discomfort.

For the prevention of coronavirus

It is important to remember that there is currently no way to protect against coronavirus infection, so melatonin is not a panacea at all. Recently, Russian scientists published an article arguing the benefits of melatonin in the treatment and prevention of COVID-19. The researchers drew attention to the fact that people over 65 are at risk, who most often suffer from sleep disorders due to a decrease in the level of this hormone with age.

Scientists also reported that horseshoe bats have significantly more melatonin in their blood than in humans, and perhaps the excess of this hormone allows them to carry infection without harming themselves. According to the authors of the article, the anti-inflammatory properties of melatonin may contribute to the prevention and treatment of coronavirus.

In order to confirm all the arguments of Russian scientists, larger studies are needed. But at least good sleep is known to have a beneficial effect on the state of the immune system.
