The more men watch pornography, the more likely they are to develop erectile dysfunction. In addition, 35% of the men surveyed considered having sex with a partner not arousing enough. An international group of scientists spoke about this at a virtual conference of the European Urological Association.
Scientists interviewed 3,267 men. They answered 118 questions about pornography, self-gratification and sex. The survey focused on men who have had sex in the past four weeks. This allowed scientists to evaluate the effect of watching porn on normal sex life.
“We found a wide variation in the responses,” said Professor Gunter de Win of the University of Antwerp. On average, men watched porn for about 70 minutes a week, about 15 minutes at a time, but there were significant deviations from these numbers.
23% of men under the age of 35 who participated in the survey had some difficulty in achieving an erection when having sex with a partner. Scientists point out that this figure is higher than they expected. The link between porn viewing time and the degree of potency deterioration was "very significant," they report.
Porn causes impotence: how does it work?
Internet pornography may be to blame for an increase in the number of young men suffering from erection problems - more sexually active men under 40 are affected by impotence.

“We need to understand what this work means and what it does not mean. This is more of a questionnaire than a clinical trial. This means that the composition of the respondents may not reflect the specifics of the entire population. However, this work was designed to show any connection between pornography and erectile dysfunction. Given the rather large sample size, we can be confident in the results,”Gunther de Vin commented on the study.
The study also showed that:
90% of men rewind video clips forward to see only the most exciting scenes;
- 65% of men believe that sex with a partner is more arousal than porn;
- 20% of those surveyed say they need to watch more "extreme" porn to get aroused like they used to.
Scientists believe that the erectile dysfunction that accompanies porn viewing is rooted in a lack of arousal. Next, scientists are going to accurately identify the main factor that negatively affects potency.
