In the oncology center. N. N. Blokhin gave a new chance for survival to doomed patients
At the National Medical Research Center of Oncology. N. N. Blokhin, the Ministry of Health of Russia opened the first Center of Competence in Russia, where they will treat especially difficult cases of cancer with unknown localization of the primary focus. According to doctors, this is a real breakthrough in the effectiveness of treating patients with very difficult cases of the disease.

As MedPortal was told in the press service of the medical institution, today, three out of a hundred oncological patients have metastases, but cannot find the primary tumor. Sometimes it represents all one or two cells that cannot be detected even with modern diagnostic capabilities. Moreover, cancer cells are so aggressive that they metastasize. If the doctor does not find the primary focus of the disease, he cannot plan an effective treatment plan, because all clinical recommendations should be primarily aimed at treating the affected organ. As a rule, such patients are doomed and die quickly.
Created in the oncology center named after N. N. Blokhin The Center of Competence has unprecedented diagnostic capabilities and a medical base, in addition, the best experts of the expert class with vast experience are involved in the department.
So, recently, the team was able to save a patient whose case, under the standard conditions of diagnosis and treatment, would have been considered hopeless. A 50-year-old woman was observed at the oncology center with a diagnosis of "metastases without an identified primary focus" in the retroperitoneal lymph nodes, liver, and left iliac region. In such cases, the scheme of work is standard: the patient is prescribed immunohistochemical markers, which show that the focus can be located in 5-6 organs. It is impossible to choose the point to which the therapy will be directed. Having worked out a number of versions, the expert group of doctors, based on the results of molecular genetic testing, focused on the colorectal localization of the tumor. At the same time, the colonoscopy of the formations was not found. The decision turned out to be correct, and after 13 courses of chemotherapy and targeted treatment, the metastases disappeared, and the prognosis was favorable.
“The creation of the Competence Center will provide a qualitative breakthrough in the effectiveness of treatment and the results of survival of patients diagnosed with metastases without an identified primary focus. This is a truly high-tech and personalized treatment that meets the highest international standards of modern medicine,”the oncology center said.
