Eating plant-based proteins can prolong life. But it's not enough just to eat foods that contain them. These foods should be substituted in your diet for foods containing animal proteins. This is evidenced by a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
It is known that proteins are found in both animal and plant foods. The first includes meat, poultry, eggs, the second - legumes, nuts, tofu, broccoli, cereals. Scientists wanted to find out if the source of obtaining proteins plays a role in human life span. To do this, they analyzed data from about 400 people aged 50-71, which had been collected earlier for the large Diet and Health Study.

Study participants reported in detail about their diet for 16 years. Scientists could calculate the amount of different types of proteins they ate and knew their lifespan.
It turned out that the mortality rate among men and women who received more than average amounts of protein from plant sources was 5% below average.
Scientists also found that the more plant proteins people got, the longer they lived. According to the authors of the study, replacing 3% of animal proteins in the diet with vegetable ones reduced the risk of death by 10%. Eating 10 grams of plant protein instead of animals for every 1000 calories reduced the risk of death by 12% for men and 14% for women.
