Menopause is associated with decreased bone density and an increased risk of fractures. Dairy products are one potential remedy for preventing this problem: they contain many components that can be beneficial to bones. But the scientific evidence for their benefits for women who have reached menopause is weak.

Milk does not help maintain bone density and reduce the risk of fractures in women who start menopause. This was shown by a study published in the journal Menopause.

A team of scientists from George Mason University collected data on the density of the hip and lumbar vertebrae in postmenopausal women. They compared the obtained data with how much dairy products these women ate. The authors obtained information for scientific work from the published data of the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation, which was conducted earlier.

The study participants were conditionally divided into four groups: who ate and drank less than 0.5 servings of dairy products, from 0.5 to 1.5, from 1.5 to 2.5 and more than 2.5. Scientists found no significant difference in bone density among women in all four groups. Likewise, the risk of non-traumatic fractures was almost the same for all participants.

Previously, data on the value of dairy products for the prevention of osteoporosis in menopause was mixed. The new study, the authors say, conclusively shows that they do not affect bone mineral density and the risk of fractures.
