IVF Stimulation Response May Indicate Chronic Disease Risk

Premature aging of the ovaries is associated with a high risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a method of treating infertility. In its early stages, doctors stimulate women to produce eggs in order to then select several of them for fertilization. It turned out that if a woman manages to take a small number of eggs, then she has a high risk of age-related diseases. Scientists from Aarhus University (Denmark) spoke about this at the annual conference of the European Society for Human Reproduction (ESHRE), which was held online.

Scientists were the first to use an indicator of the number of eggs obtained during IVF to determine the degree of aging of the ovaries and the risk of early menopause.

“Identifying women at risk for early menopause may allow early prevention, including a healthy lifestyle,” said Mette Wulf Christensen, study co-author.

Christensen noted that the findings of their study are comparable to what is known about early menopause: it is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and death.

The study included about 20 thousand women under the age of 36 years who underwent at least one IVF or ICSI cycle in Denmark. They were followed up for an average of six years. Scientists conditionally divided the participants into two groups: those who produced five or fewer eggs, and those who produced at least eight eggs. In the first case, scientists point out, we can talk about early aging of the ovaries.

The scientists compared the number of chronic diseases that developed in women from both groups during the observation period. In women with early aging of the ovary, the risk of developing chronic diseases was 26% higher. The risk of developing cardiovascular diseases turned out to be the highest: it increased by 39%. The likelihood of osteoporosis in this group was doubled. Ovarian function was not affected by cancer risk.

The authors note that the mechanisms of ovarian aging on health are not well understood.
