Early marriage increases the likelihood of alcohol abuse in people with a genetic predisposition to alcoholism. An international team of scientists came to this conclusion, which contradicts previous studies. Their work is published in Development and Psychopathology.

The authors of the new study note that previous scientific work has generally shown that marriage softens and restrains genetic addiction to alcoholism. But in older studies, scientists usually focused on older age groups.

“We found that marriage does not always protect young people from alcohol abuse. In fact, we found that early marriage (before the age of 21) exacerbates the risk of drinking among those with a genetic predisposition to it,”said Rebecca Smith of Virginia Commonwealth University, co-author research.

Smith added that the protective effect of marriage against alcohol abuse does not appear to be universal.

In the new study, the authors analyzed a sample that included data from 973 people aged 21-25 who reported regular alcohol abuse.

Scientists consider their findings important because they demonstrate that the same factors can affect alcohol consumption differently at different stages of life. In addition, the study provides new insights into the role of marriage. They note that from the point of view of developmental psychology, the discovery has a certain interpretation.

“Usually life events, such as getting married or having children, take place at certain times. When they happen earlier and later than typical times, they may not be as protective as was thought,”says Smith.

Scientists believe that people who get married early may feel its negative effects more often than older people. This may explain more frequent mental health problems and alcohol abuse in younger people.
