Breast implant disease (BTI) refers to a group of disorders thought to be associated with side effects of these devices. BGIs are still poorly understood, despite the fact that such prostheses are placed for about 60 years. In the first three decades of use, implants did not undergo clinical trials at all.
BGI includes some inflammatory and autoimmune reactions, weakness, "brain fog" and a number of other disorders. New research, published in the Annals of Plastic Surgery, confirms that patients with these conditions can usually get better after removal of the implant. The work compares in detail the condition of the patients before and after removal.
The scientists analyzed the case histories of 750 patients who underwent removal of implants for BGI within two years after their installation. They selected cases in which both operations (insertion and removal) were performed by the same doctor to make it easier to track the dynamics of symptoms.
The study authors found that 11 common symptoms of BGI became better after the implants were removed. These symptoms included chest pain, hair loss, skin irritation, difficulty breathing, memory impairments, and muscle and bone pain.
The study does not provide one hundred percent evidence that it is these foreign objects (implants) that cause severe pathologies. But work shows that BGI symptoms respond to implant removal. She also confirms that implants can cause severe inflammation.
The greatest relief after removal of the implants was felt by patients who suffered from chest and muscle pains and difficulty breathing. Scientists believe that this confirms the involvement of the immune system in the development of pathologies. The type of implant played almost no role: the body reacted in about the same way.
