It is well known that exercise prolongs life and improves health. But in practice, the life expectancy of people who, due to the nature of their work, lead a predominantly sedentary lifestyle, and those who, by the nature of their work, constantly face physical stress, were not compared.
Regular physical activity can be harmful to your health if it is too intense. Such conclusions were reached by scientists who observed representatives of various traditional arts in Japan. A new study by researchers at the Tokyo Institute of Technology is published in Palgrave Communications.
The authors compared the health and longevity data of 699 artists representing four different traditional Japanese arts: kabuki (strenuous theater), sado (tea ceremonies), rakugo (telling comic stories), and nagauta (playing musical instruments).).
The scientists reported that the findings did not meet their expectations. They assumed that kabuki artists lived longer because their occupation was associated with physical activity. But the analysis showed that representatives of this type of traditional art lived less than other participants in the study.
Excessive endurance exercise and excessive physical activity negate the benefits of exercise for kabuki actors, scientists suggest.
