In the US state of Virginia, 12 men faced an unexpected complication after taking a dietary supplement designed to improve potency. Their blood sugar dropped to life-threatening levels. The incident is documented in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. It is reported that the cause of the incident was the presence of prescription drugs in the dietary supplement.

The cases described occurred from August to November 2019. They were associated with the intake of V8 dietary supplements, which can be bought in Russia via the Internet. Men who sought medical help with typical symptoms of hypoglycemia: dizziness, sweating, trembling hands. On blood tests, all showed low blood glucose levels. They bought a drug for improving potency at a local supermarket.

Some of them reportedly dropped to 11 mg / dL blood glucose levels. Without timely assistance, such a decrease can lead to the development of seizures and death. The men spent 1 to 6 days in the hospital, some were re-hospitalized.

The V8 bottles did not list the composition. But chemical analysis showed that they contained sildenafil (known by the trade name Viagra) and glibenclamide (a type 2 diabetes drug that lowers blood glucose).

The amount of sildenafil in dietary supplements tablets practically reached the dose that Viagra contains. But the dose of glibenclamide was 10 times higher than the therapeutic one.

“Many questionable sex-enhancing products that remain on the market as OTC products carry the risk of unexpected complications for consumers,” the authors of the article write.
