HBO is considered more effective than other oxygen support methods. Usually this therapy is used for patients with various pathologies, including traumatic brain injuries, as well as during rehabilitation after complex neurosurgical operations. In Moscow hospitals, HBO is used to treat inflammation, viral diseases, as rehabilitation after strokes, as well as for patients with diabetes mellitus and diabetic foot to improve blood circulation.

“HBO is now being used for patients with coronavirus who have indications for this. The purpose of the procedure is to try to avoid transferring the patient to a ventilator. HBO sessions are carried out in combination with other therapy,”said the director of the N.V. Sklifosovsky Research Institute for Emergency Medicine, member of the Clinical Committee for Coronavirus Infection Sergei Petrikov.

So far, doctors have conducted more than 100 baro-sessions for 25 patients with COVID-10 and noted an improvement in their condition. After therapy, patients have less shortness of breath and an increase in the oxygen content in the blood, the general well-being becomes better.

“In addition, hyperbaric oxygen enhances the effects of antiviral and antibiotic therapy and reduces its side effects. All this contributes to the recovery of patients,”the doctors report.
