Natural light in the office improves nighttime sleep and thinking
The nature of the lighting affects the state of office workers from the second day of work. Sleep duration is 37 minutes longer for people who work in natural light.
Natural light in the office facilitates easier decision making and is associated with lengthening workers' nights sleep. Under artificial lighting, the performance is significantly worse. This is described by a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
Scientists from the University of Illinois recruited 30 knowledge workers to participate in the study. They worked consecutively for a week in two identical offices with different lighting. The first was three-quarters covered with cloth, so it required more electrical illumination. The second office, with glare-softening electrochromic glass, received the maximum amount of natural light.
The study participants were divided into two groups. One of them began working in an office with a predominance of natural light, and the other in an office with darkened windows. A week later, they changed jobs.
After working in an office with natural light, workers slept better, with an average of 37 minutes longer night sleep. Sleep characteristics were studied using special portable trackers. In addition, workers in offices with natural light performed 42% better on strategic thinking tests compared to those obtained in a darkened office.
According to the study, the effects of office characteristics on sleep and cognitive function became apparent from the second day of work. Sleep duration increased more in those who slept less at the start of the study.
The scientists noted that there is now an improved understanding of how natural daylight affects health. It plays a large role in the regulation of circadian rhythms, sleep quality, and cognitive function. Given the fact that modern people spend a huge amount of time indoors, it is necessary to ensure that the lighting characteristics are as close to natural indicators as possible.
