Epidemiologist told how to decipher a rapid test for antibodies to COVID-19

On his Facebook page, American epidemiologist, Professor Mikhail Favorov explained what the express test strips mean.

According to the epidemiologist, one bar means that the test worked, but the person does not have IgG or IgM antibodies. With a high probability, the person has not encountered an infection and can become infected when meeting a virus. Therefore, it is necessary to observe increased security measures.

Three stripes mean that the test worked and the person has the main IgG antibodies and early IgM antibodies, that is, not only has he encountered an infection, but also received an immune response and is protected from COVID-19. The result of the rapid test also indicates that the body's encounter with the coronavirus occurred relatively recently - from a few days to several months ago.

“However, you may feel calmer, although precautions do not hurt. Just in case, because there are dozens of respiratory pathogens,”writes Mikhail Favorov.

The expert noted that sometimes the test can show only two strips, which means that the test worked and only one of the types of antibodies was detected. According to Favorov, this is rare during an epidemic.

If the test revealed only the main IgG antibodies, this means that the person had been ill for a long time (several months ago), and all fears are already behind.

However, the presence of antibodies of early protection IgM means that a person may be in an acute period of the disease and he may have the virus.

“This is most often a false-positive result because IgM antibodies are more likely to overlap with other diseases. In this case, you can do an RNA analysis (PCR) and, in all cases, repeat the test in a week,”the epidemiologist noted.

Favorov also recalled that many tests of dubious quality are used all over the world, so it is necessary to pay attention to the CE marking on the packaging. The marking indicates that these tests are approved for use in Western Europe, where they have passed rigorous quality and accuracy tests.
