People who consume as little as half a tablespoon of olive oil a day significantly reduce their risk of developing cardiovascular disease. This is stated in a new study published by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Scientists analyzed data on diet and health of more than 60 thousand women and 30 thousand men. The observation period covered 24 years, during which time almost 10 thousand cases of cardiovascular diseases were diagnosed among the study participants.

In their calculations, the authors of the study took into account the nationalities of the participants, alcohol consumption, aspirin intake, characteristics of their diet and some other factors.

It turned out that in people who consume one and a half teaspoons (half a tablespoon) of olive oil, in general, heart and vascular diseases developed 14% less often, and the risk of coronary heart disease is 18% lower than those who did not use it at all.

Marta Guasch-Ferré, professor at the T.H. School of Public Health Chana, a co-author of the study, told The New York Times that the problem is often replacing olive oil with animal fat or margarine. She noted that, in addition to olive oil, other vegetable oils (sunflower, corn), except for coconut and palm oils, can have a beneficial effect.

“It's not just about adding olive oil. It's about replacing harmful fats with them,”Guache-Ferret emphasized.
