It is well known that, in the long term, a large amount of animal fat in the diet increases the risk of many pathologies, such as heart disease. In a new study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, scientists have shown that fatty foods can have negative effects almost immediately. It turns out that saturated fat may have a negative effect on people's ability to focus on something.

Sources of saturated fat are red meat, poultry, dairy products, and some oils (palm, coconut). Unsaturated fats, which are considered beneficial for blood vessels and the brain, are found in vegetable oils (sunflower, olive) and fish.

The new study involved 51 women. Participants underwent attentional stability tests after eating one type of experimental breakfast - one made with saturated fat or sunflower oil. The women themselves did not know what type of fat they were eating: all portions were made similar to each other (they resembled fast food), their calorie content was the same.

It was a crossover study: first, each woman was tested after eating one type of experimental breakfast, and after a few weeks the experiment was repeated with a different food.

After eating a meal that contains saturated fat, women's attention scores were 11% worse on average. This type of food has also been associated with an increase in the concentration of inflammatory markers in the blood.

In this study, the scientists did not determine what happens in the brain after eating a fatty meal. But they point out that fatty foods were previously known to increase inflammation throughout the body. In addition, fatty acids can cross the blood-brain barrier - from the blood to the brain. The study authors do not rule out that fatty acids interact directly with the brain.

“Most of the research that studies the effects of diet focuses on long periods. In our case, it was only one serving. That we saw a difference in this study is quite remarkable,”said Annelise Madison, Ohio State University professor and co-author of the study.

Scientists note that this study suggests that people who now turn to fatty foods to calm their worries about the pandemic may suffer even more attention than shown in this study.
