More than 40 thousand students were attracted to work with COVID-19 patients - Mikhail Murashko

The head of the Ministry of Health assured that students work in the "red zone" only with their consent. Mikhail Murashko said this at a meeting on the implementation of previously adopted measures to support the economy and social sphere with the participation of the President of the Russian Federation.

“We have attracted about 41 thousand students, residents and graduate students. Moreover, I would like to note that only students who have expressed their consent, who have no medical contraindications for working in such a dangerous area, work in the "red" zone. And, of course, all of them underwent additional training on the safety of medical care,”said the head of the Ministry of Health.

According to the minister, in total in Russia, more than 110 thousand doctors and 236 thousand paramedics provide assistance to patients with COVID-19.

Recall that the initiative to involve students of medical universities in the fight against coronavirus belongs to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, who announced an acute shortage of medical personnel. Last week, the mayor's office promised to pay future specialists 100 thousand rubles a month and provide them with food and the necessary protective equipment. In turn, Mikhail Murashko noted that the department is ready to consider the issue of more massive involvement of medical students in the fight against coronavirus, who are now working as volunteers.

The news of the forced mobilization of students drew controversy from the community. A petition appeared on the network demanding to ensure separation of "clean" and "red" for the safety of both students and patients, provide interns with temporary housing to reduce the risk of infection of their loved ones, and give the opportunity to refuse work in the presence of chronic diseases.

The Medical Union of Doctors Alliance published today a memo for students on how to defend their rights.

“To give up practice in such conditions is not cowardice. Students receive education, not extinguish a fire, albeit a biological one. The state guarantees students and teachers academic rights and freedoms, including declaring the right of students to health protection in accordance with paragraph 9 of part 1 of Article 34 of the Education Law. Labor in accordance with Article 37 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation is free. Students have the right to demand that university administrations comply with constitutional rights and federal laws,”the memo says.
