About a quarter of ventilated COVID-19 patients die in New York hospital network

Artificial lung ventilation (ALV) is often required for patients with COVID-19 in whom the disease is complicated by severe pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome. Over the past month, several reports have indicated that most of the infected who received mechanical ventilation for the new coronavirus infection have died.
JAMA magazine published its largest report to date, showing 25% of ventilated COVID-19 patients died in hospitals in New York's largest medical network.
Survival data for patients receiving mechanical ventilation varies significantly across reports. An earlier study in Wuhan found that of 37 ventilated patients, 30 died within one month. According to an Italian report also published in JAMA, 90% of the 1,300 ICU patients required ventilators, with a quarter of them dying. In the UK, 67% of patients who received "additional breathing support" died. And a recent report from New York reported 80% mortality among ventilated patients.
For the new review, scientists analyzed electronic medical records of 5,700 COVID-19 patients who were admitted to hospitals in the Northwell Health network. The final treatment results were known for 2634 of them. In total, about 20% of patients with coronavirus infection who were treated in this hospital network died.
In the first version of the article, scientists indicate data collected by April 4. In the updated version of the article, they take into account new information about how many people died, were discharged and required mechanical ventilation. As a result, the survival statistics have changed dramatically in a positive direction.
The report says that most patients with severe forms of COVID-19 had concomitant diseases: hypertension in 57%, obesity in 41%, diabetes in 34%.
