Russia has every chance of repeating the scenario of China or the United States - biologist Alexander Panchin on COVID
According to Alexander Panchin, biologist, popularizer of science, scientific journalist and Member of the RAS Commission on Combating Pseudoscience, many Russians are quite skeptical about the coronavirus pandemic, because they do not take into account the exponential growth of cases. He told about this in an interview with Medportal.
“Now many say: well, just think, several hundred dead, much more die in road accidents. Yes, we do not have as many infected people as in other countries, but very high rates - the number of cases increases every five days. This is very bad. You can imagine what numbers we will see after a while, if we do not break the exponent. The more infected, the more deaths there will be,”he told MedPortal in an online interview.
Panchin also noted that it is now difficult to say which scenario will be implemented in Russia: as in China, where after reaching the plateau, it was possible to slow down the increase in the number of infected, or as in the United States, where the coronavirus is spreading at a very high rate and the horizon is not yet visible.
“People often mention measles as being more contagious, but let's not forget there is a vaccine against measles. Only thanks to her, local outbreaks of this disease are quickly extinguished, preventing the transition to an epidemic,”said the biologist.
As of April 17, 32,008 cases of coronavirus were registered in Russia, an increase over the last day amounted to 4,070 cases. 2,590 people recovered, the death toll - 273 people.
Earlier, the Moscow mayor's office announced that the peak incidence in the capital is expected in the next two to three weeks.
