Scientists have shown how viruses can spread with a simple conversation
During normal conversation, a significant amount of saliva is thrown out of the mouth, which can potentially contain pathogens. Scientists have provided visual evidence of how the mask prevents the formation of such an aerosol.

A group of scientists from the American National Institutes of Health at the University of Pennsylvania demonstrated how saliva flies out of the mouth during an ordinary calm conversation. In the experiment, they evaluated the role of the mask in suppressing the formation of this aerosol. Their work is published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
To track the size of the saliva particles and the direction they fly when talking, the scientists used the light of a green laser. During the video filming, the participant said the words “stay healthy” first without a mask, and then with a mask (using a slightly damp face towel). The video is posted on the research page.
Pronouncing the words "stay healthy" resulted in the formation of a large number of droplets ranging in size from 20 to 500 micrometers. When they reached the "laser curtain", there were flashes: from 227 to 347, the more of them, the louder the person spoke.
Scientists report that this study does not show what the role of droplets formed during conversation is in the spread of COVID-19. Their goal was to provide visual evidence of aerosol formation during a conversation and to qualitatively describe the effect of the mask in preventing the formation of this aerosol.
