Biologist Ancha Baranova calls ginger and turmeric "unrelated" to fight against COVID
In an online interview with Medportal, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor at the GMU School of Systems Biology (USA) Ancha Baranova answered questions regarding the role of melotonin in the treatment of COVID, as well as the "effectiveness" of folk remedies.

Popular fads about the healing remedies of ginger and lemons have led to a jump in the price of these products, at the same time, doctors around the world have recorded cases of paracetamol poisoning, which has also become part of the mythology of COVID-19 prevention. Biologist Ancha Baranova in an online interview reminded MedPortal readers that there are currently no prophylactic drugs for coronavirus. And even more so, it is impossible to cure COVID-19 with the help of folk remedies such as broth of fir.
“The broth of fir has a great national fame: as you know, with its help in the Gulag people were saved from vitamin deficiency. However, there are thousands of plants that are also rich in vitamins, and they are much tastier. For example, ginger and turmeric are excellent anti-inflammatories, but remember that they have nothing to do with the fight against coronavirus. In theory, they can be used to optimize the body's response to the cytokine storm that the coronavirus causes. However, one should not count on their effectiveness,”said Ancha Baranova.
The scientist also warned about the deadly danger of an overdose of paracetamol, which does not help to protect against coronavirus, but is toxic to the liver.
"Uncontrolled intake of paracetamol leads to the fact that people end up in a serious condition in the hospital, not because they have a coronavirus, but because the liver has failed," the biologist said.
According to Baranova, aspirin can support the body during a pandemic, but it should be taken only in the dosage prescribed by the doctor. She also mentioned the benefits of melatonin, which reduces inflammation and normalizes sleep.
“Good sleep is known to help fight coronavirus infection. Melatonin will not reduce the risk of infection in any way, since it only affects humans, but it can prepare your body to meet the virus. There are no guarantees, but melatonin can help a certain percentage of those who fall ill,”said Ancha Baranova.
