"The most dangerous place now is the elevator in your house" - biologist Ancha Baranova

It is much easier to catch the coronavirus in the elevator of your own house than in crowded places, said Ancha Baranova, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor at the GMU School of Systems Biology (USA) in an online interview with MedPortal on April 10.

“This is a small enclosed space in which there are many people during the day, and if a sick person sneezes or touches the buttons there, then you will be very unlucky if you enter this elevator in half an hour. It is better to avoid the elevator altogether now, or go there wearing a mask and gloves,”Baranova said.

The geneticist also commented on the recent statement of virologist Hendrik Streck from the University of Bonn that during his study in Heinsberg (note: the city from which the COVID-19 epidemic in Germany began) viable viruses were not found on surfaces. According to Baranova, she has not yet read the study, but it is too early to jump to conclusions that coronavirus is an exclusively aerosol infection.

The professor recalled the famous story of a Korean woman who, for religious reasons, refused to be tested and infected a large number of parishioners in her church.

“All her movements were tracked in great detail, and then superimposed on a map of the movements of other infected. In particular, it turned out that she came to the service at the church, sat down on the bench, and two hours later another woman sat down in her place and also fell ill. It can be assumed, of course, that an aerosol with a virus remained in the air, but I think that the infection nevertheless occurred through the surfaces,”Ancha Baranova said.

In her opinion, now, when the peak incidence in Russia is still ahead, citizens should put aside false shame and purchase a special mask that tightly fits the face.

“This option is more expensive than a medical mask or respirator, but more reliable. It is easier to breathe in it. In addition, you need to be able to wear a respirator, and people who are far from medicine may not be able to cope with this,”says the scientist.
