Scientists have checked what quarantine measures are effective in preventing COVID-19
There is currently no effective treatment for COVID-19, and no vaccine has been developed for this infection. This makes restrictive measures especially relevant - social distancing, isolation. It is important to know the effectiveness of quarantine measures so that their volume is adequate: sufficient to control infection, but not excessive. The Cochrane Collaboration took up the issue.

The Cochrane Collaboration reviewed the available evidence of the effectiveness of quarantine measures in preventing the spread of COVID-19. Scientists examined the effectiveness of combining quarantine with other methods of fighting infection. Their report is posted on the Cochrane Library website.
The review confirmed that early quarantine and its combination with other measures play an important role in controlling the spread of the novel SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. But questions remain about how best to use these methods of dealing with the spread of infection when the time comes to ease quarantine.
Scientists analyzed 29 studies. 10 of them dealt directly with COVID-19, the rest focused on other coronavirus diseases - severe acute respiratory syndrome and Middle East respiratory syndrome.
Key findings from the Cochrane Collaboration:
Quarantining people who have come into contact with infected people prevents a large number of new cases of illness and death. It turned out to be the most effective of the measures considered.
- Quarantine for people who returned from countries with an unfavorable situation for a new coronavirus infection prevented a small number of new cases of illness and death.
- The combination of quarantine with school closures, travel restrictions and physical distancing increased its effectiveness. It reduced the number of transmissions and reduced the number of severe cases requiring intensive care.
- Earlier and more complete introduction of quarantines and other preventive measures is more effective in containing COVID-19.
The review authors indicate that they analyzed studies that were simulations based on current knowledge of the virus. Information about the causative agent of COVID-19 may be supplemented, so this data may become out of date.
“The Cochrane Review showed that […] local authorities must constantly monitor the situation in order to maintain an optimal balance of measures in place. Then the balance of benefits and harms from these measures will be the most appropriate,”said Barbara Nußbaumer-Streit, lead author of the study.
