Scientists continue to look for ways to cure COVID-19, or at least help patients cope with the disease more easily. Doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital and their Italian colleagues will begin researching nitric oxide (NO) in the treatment of COVID-19. They want to know if he will help patients with coronavirus infection in the most serious condition. There is also speculation that NO can prevent COVID-19, says the Gizmodo website.

Breathing aid

Nitric oxide (NO) should not be confused with nitrous oxide, the laughing gas (NO2), which is used as an anesthetic. NO plays an important role in our body, doctors have long been using its ability to dilate blood vessels, stabilize their inner lining.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is one of the main complications of COVID-19 and a common cause of death in this disease. With it, pulmonary tissue edema develops, which prevents the body from absorbing oxygen even when connected to a ventilator. In addition, with ARDS, blood clots can form in the vessels of the lungs, blood circulation is impaired. NO inhalation has already been used to help people with this condition. Scientists want to know if it will help critically ill patients with COVID-19 breathe efficiently, get more oxygen.

Does it kill coronaviruses?

Nitric oxide may have another unexpected property. Almost 20 years ago, Chinese scientists conducted a study that suggested that this substance could kill or suppress the reproduction in the lungs of the coronavirus, which causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The epidemic of this disease was in 2003-2004. This virus is a close relative of the new coronavirus. Laboratory research confirms the theory of the antiviral effect of NO.

The proximity of the novel coronavirus and the coronavirus causing SARS gives hope that NO will have a similar effect on COVID-19. It is believed that during resuscitation, patients shed more viruses than usual, which increases the risk of infection by resuscitators. Therefore, suppressing viruses with nitric oxide, if confirmed, could protect doctors.

What scientists will do

The clinical research on nitric oxide will be led by Warren Zapol of Harvard Medical School. In one of them, scientists will try this method of treatment on severe patients, in the second - on patients with moderate COVID-19. In both studies, scientists will compare the results of nitric oxide treatment with a conventional treatment protocol.

Another study will have to clarify whether nitric oxide protects healthcare workers from infection. But it has not yet been registered and approved by the regulatory authorities. Zapol and colleagues theorize that doctors and nurses might receive a dose of NO before and after work.

“I see doctors and nurses getting infected with COVID-19. I hate this. So we hope to see if we can prevent this,”Zapol said.
