Measures to combat the spread of COVID-19 can lead to decreased levels of physical activity. Gyms are being closed, social contacts are frozen, and self-isolation at home contributes to immobility. At the same time, right now, exercises may be especially necessary.

Everyone knows that exercise is useful, one way or another. It is known about the connection between physical activity and the state of the body's defenses. One study found that an increase in sedentary time of just one hour per day was associated with decreased immunity. An inactive lifestyle is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes mellitus, pathologies that increase the risk of death from COVID-19.

Professor Claire L. Shovlin of Imperial College London and her colleagues in the influential medical journal The BMJ talked about why they consider physical activity the most important issue during mass isolation at home.

Scientists remind that among the risk factors for the severe course of COVID-19 is old age and concomitant diseases, first of all, hypertension, chronic lung diseases and diabetes mellitus. They believe that current guidelines for COVID-19 lack advice to curb the progression of chronic diseases that worsen the prognosis of a new coronavirus infection. In their opinion, people from risk groups should try to strengthen themselves in order to minimize the risk of a severe course of infection in case of infection.

Scientists point out that before an expected stressful situation, for example, before a planned operation or pregnancy, doctors often recommend that people get their physical condition in order. They cite examples of qualitative research that show the effectiveness of “early preparation” (called pre-rehabilitation) for medical stress. For example, in two scientific works (1,2), pre-rehabilitation was studied among people who had a high risk of complications after surgery. Those who exercised regularly had a much better recovery from surgery.

Shovlin and colleagues emphasize that with regular, moderate-intensity exercise, cardiovascular health can be improved in four weeks.

Scientists believe that home exercise should be an essential part of home isolation. WHO recommendations on physical activity, including for the elderly, can be a guideline. Any activity makes a contribution to maintaining health, including simple walking - around the house or on the street, if contact with other people can be avoided.

Elderly and weakened people can be recommended to sit more evenly and do breathing exercises. A meta-analysis has shown that training the respiratory muscles improves the condition of weakened people.

Physical activity is needed every day, scientists say. But if an infection develops and the temperature rises, exercise should be stopped.

“We believe that prevention before infection can be important and effective with potential public health benefits,” the scientists write.
