Scientists have evaluated how effective the travel restriction that was introduced in China at the beginning of the epidemic was an effective measure of containing the spread of the coronavirus. The study found that such decisive action gave the world time to prepare to fight the new infection. The scientific work was published in Science.
Researchers conducted simulations to assess the impact of travel restrictions in China during the COVID-19 outbreak. These calculations were based on known data on how quickly infected people become infectious and how many people can infect one sick person. The authors also took into account the existing reports on the spread of the disease.
In mainland China, restricting movement around the country has had little success. The researchers believe that the delay in the spread of infection as a result of these measures was no more than three to five days. According to scientists, the virus would almost certainly find its way from Wuhan to several other parts of China by the end of January.
Restricting travel has produced more visible results on a global scale, the study found. It is estimated that by mid-February, the number of "imports" of coronavirus would have been 80% higher if China had not introduced such preventive measures.
The new findings confirm a positive assessment of China's actions to curb the spread of the new coronavirus. The country has previously been criticized for tough quarantine measures, including from the World Health Organization. But this has recently begun to change: in late February, Sylvia Braind, director of WHO's infectious disease control division, said China's measures had delayed the spread of the disease by weeks.
