The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has changed the diagnostic criteria for identifying people who require testing for the new coronavirus. This happened after a patient with Covid-19 was identified in the United States, for whom it was not possible to identify the source of the infection. He has not visited countries with a high incidence and has not come into contact with infected people.
Earlier in the CDC guide for American doctors, it was indicated that a patient could be suspected of Covid-19 if he traveled to countries where this disease is common, or came into contact with someone with whom this diagnosis was laboratory confirmed. The new patient does not meet these criteria. This is the country's first case of spread of infection in everyday life.
“It says that the virus is circulating in society and almost everyone is at risk. We don't know who might be the carrier. We don't know where we can get it,”Dr. Dean Blumberg, an infectious disease specialist at the CDC, told CNN. He recalled that the virus is new, so none of us has immunity to it.
The new diagnostic criterion indicates that Covid-19 should be suspected in people with severe lower respiratory tract diseases (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome) who require hospitalization and who have no other diagnoses that explain their serious condition.
