A hearty breakfast will help you burn more calories

Researchers from the University of Lübeck concluded that a hearty breakfast burns 2.5 times more calories than skipping that meal. Consequently, those who like a hearty breakfast have a higher chance of losing weight. Scientists attribute this to daily differences in metabolism.

If you want to better control your weight, eat a healthy and hearty breakfast, German scientists recommend. The results of their experiment are published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Researchers from the University of Lübeck concluded that a hearty breakfast burns 2.5 times more calories than skipping that meal. Consequently, those who like a hearty breakfast have a higher chance of losing weight. Scientists attribute this to daily differences in metabolism.

The study involved 16 healthy male volunteers at the age of 23 with normal weight, no family history of type 2 diabetes or bad habits.

The participants were divided into two groups. One group was given a low-calorie breakfast (11% of the individual daily calorie requirement) and a high-calorie dinner (69% of the daily calorie requirement) for three days. The other is breakfast and dinner, which are opposite in terms of calories. After a two-week break, the groups were reversed and the experiment repeated.

The researchers used a calorimeter to find out if there were any changes in thermogenesis (the heat energy that is generated from food eaten) and how it might help with weight loss.

The results showed that a diet with a large breakfast and few calories in the evening had a beneficial effect on heat production and glucose metabolism. Researchers also found that eating a low-calorie breakfast increased the likelihood of gaining weight - due to increased hunger and cravings for sweets, people took snacks between meals.

“Our results show that food eaten for breakfast - regardless of the number of calories it contains - produces twice the thermogenesis due to diet than the same food eaten for dinner. Scientists believe this could help end the obesity crisis and a host of comorbidities such as diabetes,”concluded lead researcher Juliane Richter.
