Scientists told what lifestyle factors and bad habits you need to pay attention to in order to live much longer without diabetes, heart disease and cancer. In their work, they analyzed how many years of healthy life can be added to us by quitting smoking, alcohol and unhealthy diets, as well as weight control and physical activity. The research results are published in BMJ.
“We have found that following a healthy lifestyle can significantly extend the years a person lives without disease. In particular, women who monitored all five factors added 10 years to a healthy life, and men almost 8 years,”said one of the study authors, Frank Hu.
The study involved 38366 men and 73196 women who were followed up for 28 and 34 years, respectively. Scientists evaluated the impact of five factors of a healthy lifestyle: a healthy weight (body mass index below 25), daily physical activity for at least 30 minutes, moderate alcohol consumption, a good diet, and no smoking.
According to the data obtained, women aged 50 years with all of the listed healthy habits lived 14 years longer than women who did not have these habits, and men - 12 years longer.
Women whose lifestyles included 4 or 5 healthy habits over the next 20-30 years had an additional 10.6 years without disease compared to women who did not get rid of bad habits. On average, this was 8 years without cancer, 10 years without cardiovascular disease, and 12 years without diabetes. For men, healthy life expectancy increased by 7.6 years. On average - 6 years without cancer, almost 9 years without heart disease and more than 10 years without diabetes.
In cases where cancer was diagnosed during the study, those participants who practiced 4 out of 5 healthy habits lived for another 23 years. While those who continued to lead an unhealthy lifestyle - only 11 years old. A similar picture was observed in heart disease and diabetes.
“Healthy living habits not only prolong life, but also improve the quality of life and reduce the suffering associated with chronic disease. It's never too late to embrace these habits,”said Frank Hu.
