A new study on Tamiflu (oseltamivir) has shown it is effective against influenza. Most impressively, he helped the elderly and people with concomitant diseases: their symptoms of the disease disappeared two to three days earlier. This is the first such large independent scientific work that tests the effectiveness of a drug in outpatient practice.

A new study on Tamiflu (oseltamivir) has shown it is effective against influenza. Most impressively, he helped the elderly and people with concomitant diseases: their symptoms of the disease disappeared two to three days earlier. The scientific work, published in the journal Lancet, was sponsored by the European Commission.

Oseltamivir is an anti-influenza drug from the group of neurominidase inhibitors. Despite its widespread use, scientists often point out that the evidence for its benefits is conflicting and insufficient. This is due to the small number of independent studies: most of them were paid for by the manufacturer.

The study, which was conducted by scientists from the Universities of Utrecht and Oxord, involved 3266 patients from 15 European countries. This is the first major independent scientific study to test the effectiveness of oseltamivir in an outpatient setting.

“We found that oseltamivir helped people recover from flu-like illnesses on average one day earlier than they would have done without it. Older, sicker patients and patients with underlying medical conditions generally benefited more and could expect their symptoms to go away two to three days earlier than those who did not receive the medication. At the same time, we found that people who were prescribed oseltamivir were more likely to experience nausea and vomiting,”said Professor Chris Butler of the University of Oxford, lead author of the study.

The study also showed that starting treatment with oseltamivir 48 hours after the onset of symptoms was almost as effective as starting it earlier. Patients with virologically confirmed influenza did not have better treatment outcomes than those diagnosed on the basis of symptoms.

People who received treatment were 4% less likely to need antibiotics. Their families had 6% fewer flu-like illnesses.
