More and more new information is emerging about the potential dangers of e-cigarettes. More and more new information is emerging about the potential dangers of e-cigarettes. In a new study published in Scientific Reports, the authors described the ingredients in the flavored liquids and capsules used in e-cigarettes. In experiments on cell and tissue cultures, they established the potential harm of these compounds.

Scientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center have detailed the harmful effects of aroma components on lung tissue. Among the harmful effects found are inflammation and genetic damage, which in the long term significantly increase the risk of respiratory disease and even cancer.

“While names such as mango, cucumber and mint give the impression of the safety of the aromas in e-liquids, the reality is that these sensations come from chemicals. The results indicate that exposure to these chemicals causes damage and dysfunction in the lungs, predicting long-term health effects,”said Irfan Rahman, lead author of the study.

With the exception of nicotine, and propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin, which are the basis of vaping liquids, most manufacturers do not disclose what chemical compounds they use to create flavors.

Through mass spectrometry, the researchers identified nearly 40 chemicals present in various combinations in seven flavors made by JUUL. These include hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds, which are commonly used in industry and can be harmful if inhaled.

Scientists exposed human lung tissue, including bronchial epithelial cells (which play an important role in gas exchange) and monocytes (cells of the immune system), to aerosol vapors from aromatic capsules.

They found that the released chemicals cause inflammation and destroy the integrity of epithelial cells, which can ultimately lead to acute lung damage and respiratory disease. Vapors also damage DNA in cells, potentially a harbinger of cancer.

“Vaping technology has only been around for a short period of time and its use, especially among young people, has only recently begun to grow rapidly. This study provides additional evidence that vaping - although less harmful in the short term than burning tobacco - leads chronic users to serious health problems later in life,”Rahman concluded.
