New drugs have been registered in Russia for allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT) for allergy to antigens of timothy, ragweed and house dust mites. They will be distributed through allergy centers, they are not yet available in pharmacies. This was announced by doctor-immunologist Andrei Bakhtin on the TrueImmunology channel in Telegram.
ASIT is a method of allergy treatment that is used to reduce a person's sensitivity to the natural effects of allergens. For this, increasing doses of the allergen are introduced into the patient's body, which are associated with the manifestations of the disease. The effect after treatment usually persists for a long time.
The active ingredient of the first new drug is frozen drops of Timothy's meadow pollen allergen extract, it has been approved for use since 5 years. The second medicine contains allergens of Ambrosia pollen, it can be prescribed from the age of 18. The third medicine - allergens of house dust mites D.pteronissimus and D.farinae, it is allowed to use it from 12 years old. It is expected that the last two drugs will eventually be allowed to be prescribed to children from 5 years of age, as indicated in European regulations, Bakhtin points out.
The doctor writes that treatment with these drugs does not imply a set of doses, which is often required with ASIT. All tablets contain the same amount of active ingredient. They do not require constant storage in the cold, so you can take them with you on trips.
The immunologist reminds that for the first time these drugs, like other drugs for sublingual immunotherapy, must be taken in the presence of an allergist. It is necessary to start treatment in advance, before the flowering season: the body must have time to develop at least a minimum tolerance to allergens. The physician indicates that the recommended year-round intake gives the best results. The total duration of therapy is at least 3 years.
Before starting ASIT, conduct skin allergy tests and specific IgE testing to ensure that therapy with these drugs will be effective. If necessary, it is possible to carry out treatment with two drugs at once.
