Children whose mothers had diabetes during pregnancy are more likely to develop early cardiovascular disease than other children. The authors of the new study highlight the importance of effective diabetes screening and prevention in women of childbearing age.

A large study published in The BMJ found that children whose mothers had diabetes during pregnancy were more likely to develop early cardiovascular disease than other children.

Scientists analyzed data from over 2.4 million children born in Denmark from 1977 to 2016. The authors considered both the diagnosis of diabetes in mothers before pregnancy and diabetes that arose during pregnancy. They paid special attention to the health of children whose mothers had concomitant cardiovascular diseases (CVD) or a history of diabetes complications.

Children with mothers with diabetes mellitus were diagnosed with CVD on average 29% more often than children of mothers without diabetes. Increased rates were noted in each age group - both in children (under 20) and in early adulthood (from 20 to 40). The mother's type of diabetes was not reflected in the results.

The researchers also identified which CVDs are most common in the children of diabetic mothers. These are heart failure, hypertension, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Most often, the development of CVD was previously observed in people whose mothers suffered from complications of diabetes or concomitant heart disease.

The authors emphasize that the study does not show that the study does not prove that diabetes in the mother is the cause of CVD in the child. Nevertheless, the large sample size and long follow-up period suggest the reliability of the data obtained, which “underlines the importance of effective strategies for screening and preventing diabetes in women of childbearing age,” the researchers noted.
