Officials at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said there was more information on the cause of the mysterious lung lesions associated with e-cigarettes and vaping. Agency scientists found vitamin E acetate in fluid drawn from the lungs of all patients they have examined in detail to date.

Officials from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have said more information has surfaced on the cause of the mysterious e-cigarette and vaping-related lung lesions (EVALI). Agency scientists found vitamin E acetate in fluid drawn from the lungs of all patients they have examined in detail to date. This is an oily synthetic analogue of the vitamin, which is often added to products with tetrahydrocannabinol (the active ingredient in marijuana) sold on the black market.

Synthetic vitamin E has been under suspicion for a long time, since the beginning of the outbreak of lung vaping. It was previously known that inhalation of this substance is a rare cause of pneumonia.

“These findings provide direct evidence for the detection of vitamin E acetate in the primary lesion in the lungs,” said Anne Schuchat, first deputy director of the CDC, at a press conference. These results are a breakthrough in investigating the causes of the disease, she said.

Laboratory findings also highlighted that vaping-related lung lesions are most often associated with the use of foods containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It was found in 82% of lung fluid samples and nicotine in 62%.

Interestingly, THC was also found in three patients who reported that they did not use it, which confirms the theory that only a small number of lung lesions are associated with the use of nicotine products. The CDC still does not rule out that the latter may play a role in the development of the disease. There is a suspicion that vitamin E acetate is not the only substance responsible for the development of the new disease. At least a few doctors have failed to detect pneumonia associated with oily components in patients.

As of November 5, 2,051 people were ill with lung damage associated with e-cigarettes or vaping, 39 cases ended in death.
