In middle age, women who have given birth have a younger brain than women who have not given birth. Scientists described this phenomenon in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Scientists analyzed the structure of the brains of approximately 12,000 middle-aged women in the UK. To do this, they examined their MRI scans obtained from the UK Biobank database. An artificial intelligence trained to determine biological age based on the MRI structure of the brain analyzed all the scans. Further, the results of the indicators of women who gave birth and who did not give birth were compared.

The biological age of the brain may differ from the calendar one. It is determined based on changes in the structure of the organ. In women who have given birth, according to the neural network, the biological age of the brain is, on average, 0.4 years less than the chronological or passport age. Also, a pattern was revealed between the number of children and the difference in the chronological and biological age of the brain. For women with two children, it was six months, with three children - three quarters of a year.

Scientists are not entirely sure what caused this effect. In their opinion, it is not a consequence of a genetic predisposition. They also found no association with educational attainment and body mass index.

The results indicate that many physiological changes that develop in the body during pregnancy underlie "brain rejuvenation". It is likely that their effects on aging can affect the aging of the nervous system after childbirth.
