According to the maximum walking speed of people aged 45, one can judge the rate of aging of their brain and body, according to a study by scientists from the American Duke University. The results were published in the JAMA Network Open magazine.

Those who walk slowly, scientists say, tend to have worse lungs, teeth and immune systems than those who walk fast. It is striking, according to the authors, that they are talking about 45-year-olds, and not about the elderly.

No less surprising results were obtained by neurocognitive testing, which these people underwent in childhood. It could also predict who would walk slower. Their IQ scores at age three, along with tests for language comprehension, frustration tolerance, motor skills, and emotional stability, predicted walking speed at age 45.

“Doctors know that those who walk slowly in their 70s and 80s tend to die earlier than their peers who walk faster. But this study spanned preschool through middle age and showed that slow walking is a sign of a problem that occurs decades before old age,”says study lead author Terry E. Moffitt.

The scientists used data from nearly 1,000 people who were born within one year in Dunedin, New Zealand. MRI scans during their last examination showed that slow-walking people generally had less total brain volume, an average thinner cerebral cortex, less brain surface area, and a higher incidence of white matter hyperintensities (small lesions associated with disease small vessels of the brain). Their brains looked somewhat older.

In addition, a group of eight people evaluated the age of the study participants from photographs, and the results of their assessment showed that those who walked slower looked older as well.

Gait speed has long been used to assess the health and aging of elderly patients, and in the same study, participants were relatively young. The authors regret that there is no way to study the walking speed and MRI scans of participants in childhood.

Some of the differences in participants' health and cognitive abilities may be related to their lifestyle, but the authors believe that in childhood it is possible to determine who will walk the slowest in adulthood.
