Japanese scientists have found that men who take shorter strides when walking are 40% more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction. A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine examined the link between gait and erectile dysfunction in 324 men.
The authors believe this connection is due to weak pelvic muscles. These muscles are involved in the movement of the legs and promote erection by controlling circulation. According to Japanese experts, training these muscles can help men regain their ability to erect.
Erectile dysfunction or impotence is a condition in which a man is unable to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for intercourse. It can stem from a variety of causes, from stress and depression to diseases that affect circulation, including heart disease and diabetes.
During the study, the researchers tested the participants' stride length and the height of the feet when walking. The results show that men with the shortest strides and fewer people who raise their feet off the ground are 40% more likely to develop impotence. Experts believe this is to blame for the weakness of the pelvic muscles, and believe that regular exercise can help increase the sexual performance of men.
"Muscle strength, as well as flexibility in the pelvis and legs, are key factors in erectile dysfunction," said lead study author Dr. Shingo Hatakeyama of the Hirosaki University School of Medicine.
According to British urologist Raj Persad, stride length may be related to physical strength and libido, and thus testosterone, which controls sexual function. He believes that a long stride may be associated with better blood vessel function as well as greater confidence in one's sex appeal. He also stresses that exercise is very beneficial in preventing erectile dysfunction.
