Scientists have linked osteoarthritis to a significant increase in the risk of heart disease. The authors point out that this problem occurs due to the forced hypodynamia as a result of joint pain. The study was published in the journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage.
Osteoarthritis is a painful joint disease that leads to degenerative changes in cartilage and bones. According to world statistics, it affects about 10% of men and 13% of women over the age of 60.
Scientists analyzed data on 469,177 residents of southern Sweden aged 45 to 84 years. They monitored their health for up to 11 years, during which time osteoarthritis of various joints was found in 29189 of them.
In most cases, scientists have not found a link between osteoarthritis and various causes of death. But it has been found that people with osteopritis of the knee or hip joint suffer from chronic heart disease and heart failure up to 20% more often than the average. The risk increased with the duration of osteoarthritis. It became most obvious when the illness was nine to 11 years old.
“Our findings have an explanation because people are inactive with joint pain, this passivity, along with obesity, increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease,” said study author Martin Englund of Lund University in Sweden.
He added that if a person has osteoarthritis, he “needs to learn how to move and stay mobile without causing injury. Exercise is a really important part of the treatment for this disease. There are no quick fixes and miracle cures."
