Men looking to boost their libido or gain weight should not rely on testosterone-boosting supplements, also known as "T-Boosters". According to research published in The World Journal of Men's Health, these alternatives to traditional testosterone replacement therapy may not have the required ingredients.

“Many supplements on the market just contain vitamins and minerals, but do nothing to increase testosterone levels. Often people are vulnerable to the marketing of these products, making it difficult to identify what is myth and what is reality,”said Mary K. Samplaski, assistant professor of clinical urology at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.

Testosterone is the main male sex hormone responsible for sperm production, the Adam's apple and the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics. It is thanks to him that "masculine" features develop - pronounced muscles, a deep voice, broad shoulders and a hairy chest. After age 30, most men experience a gradual decrease in testosterone levels, sometimes causing these functions to decrease or new symptoms such as erectile dysfunction appear. In an attempt to turn back the clock, some men are turning to "testosterone boosters."

A team of scientists used a structured review approach to examine the active ingredients and advertising claims for 50 supplements. The researchers used the Google search engine and coined the search term "testosterone booster", mimicking an Internet search for someone looking to boost testosterone levels. Then they selected the first 50 products that came up in their search.

In addition, the published scientific literature on the effects on testosterone production of the 109 components found in supplements was studied. The most common ingredients in supplements were zinc, fenugreek extract, and vitamin B6.

The researchers also compared the content of each supplement with the FDA recommended daily allowance and the US National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine's US Institute of Medicine.

Researchers came across 16 major claims for the benefits of these supplements for men, including claims to "increase testosterone or free testosterone," "increase lean body mass or muscle mass," or "increase sex drive or libido."

Although 90% of supplement marketing material claimed to increase testosterone levels, researchers found that less than 25% of supplements had data to support these claims. In addition, many supplements contained high doses of vitamins and minerals, sometimes exceeding acceptable limits.

Unlike drugs, supplements are not intended to treat, diagnose, or prevent disease as recommended by the US Food and Drug Administration. Thus, to protect the consumer, the researchers noted the need for stricter regulations regarding testosterone-boosting supplements.

While no one can escape the effects of aging, there are a few things men can do to solve their problems. In particular, testosterone replacement therapy has proven itself well.

“The safest and most effective way to increase testosterone levels for men is to consult a doctor or dietitian,” said Mary K. Samplaski.
