Common antiseptic linked to fracture risk in women

Exposure to the antiseptic triclosan, which is often found in cosmetics, toothpaste, and products such as toys and clothing, can lead to an increased risk of osteoporosis in women. This is evidenced by a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Exposure to the antiseptic triclosan, which is often found in cosmetics, toothpaste, and products such as toys and clothing, can lead to an increased risk of osteoporosis in women. This is evidenced by a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

The study looked at data from 1,848 women between 2005 and 2010, and found that women who had elevated levels of triclosan in their urine were more likely to develop osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a metabolic disorder of the bones in which bone density decreases, which increases the risk of fractures, back pain and decreased growth. Researchers believe there is a definite link between bone health and triclosan, in part because it affects thyroid function. Previous research has shown that thyroid hormone imbalances can cause bone loss and increase the risk of fracture.

Triclosan is an ingredient that has been used in some disinfectants, toothpaste and cosmetics, as well as in kitchenware, toys, furniture, and clothing. It is added to these products to prevent bacterial contamination.

Since 2016, the US has begun to restrict the use of triclosan and certain other chemicals in some consumer products because they have not been proven safe and effective for long-term daily use. In April 2019, the U.S. banned triclosan in over-the-counter hand sanitizers. However, it is still used in other products.

Some animal studies have shown that prolonged exposure to this chemical increases their risk of skin cancer. Other research has demonstrated that exposure to triclosan has the potential to interfere with some reproductive processes and delay development in children. Another study suggests that its use may be linked to the spread of antibiotic resistance.

“Previous laboratory studies have shown that triclosan can negatively affect bone mineral density in cell cultures as well as in animals. However, little was known about the link between triclosan and human bone health. To our knowledge, this is the first epidemiological study to investigate the link between triclosan exposure, bone mineral density, and osteoporosis,”says study author Yingjun Li of the Hangzhou Medical College School of Public Health.) in China.
