Plant-based diet led to remission of Crohn's disease in patient

For many chronic diseases, including diabetes, coronary heart disease, and rheumatoid arthritis, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains is important for both treatment and prevention. For Crohn's disease, a plant-based diet is also very beneficial for disease remission, according to a report published in the journal Nutrients.

The article describes the case of a young man in his 20s who was diagnosed with Crohn's disease after having had episodic severe abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea for many years. After a year of treatment with intravenous drugs, he started remission.

The following year, the patient eliminated all animal and processed foods from his diet during a 40-day religious fast, and got rid of Crohn's disease symptoms. He then decided to continue with a plant-based diet (fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes), which led to a complete remission of Crohn's disease. Endoscopy showed complete healing of the lining of the small intestine, he was able to stop taking the medication, he did not have any relapses due to the fact that he changed his diet.

“This clinical case provides hope for hundreds of thousands of people suffering from painful symptoms associated with Crohn's disease,” study co-author Hana Kahleova said in a press release.

Only about 10% of patients with Crohn's disease achieve long-term remission with standard drugs, and about half of patients need surgery. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that usually affects the ileum and also part of the colon. The exact cause of the disease is unknown, but it is believed to be caused by a combination of factors, including genetics, environmental influences, and an upregulated immune system.

It's important to understand that a fiber-rich plant-based diet promotes gut health. Fiber may be protective against Crohn's disease and other diseases of the digestive system. While more research is needed, previous research has supported the conclusion that a diet rich in plant-based proteins and whole foods may help Crohn's disease patients.

“This study supports the idea that food is indeed medicine. Not only does it show that eating a plant-based diet high in fiber can lead to remission of Crohn's disease, but all the "side effects" are positive - they are reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer, "says Hana Kaleova.
