While there is debate as to whether e-cigarette smoking is safer than regular smoking, a recent incident is a major concern. The teenager's electronic cigarette exploded, knocking out several of his teeth and breaking his jaw.

An article published in The New England Journal of Medicine describes what e-cigarette explosions can cause. About a year ago, a 17-year-old boy was admitted to the emergency room with pain and swelling in his lower jaw. Two hours earlier, an electronic cigarette exploded in his mouth. The treating doctors found a puncture on the chin and large wounds in the mouth. A 3D scan of the teen's head revealed the true extent of the damage.

“The electronic cigarette tore apart the lower jaw, causing a fracture and loss of part of the bone. He also lost several teeth, had a large cut in his mouth and burns on his lips,”said Katie Russell, a pediatric trauma doctor who treated the boy at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City, US.

The hospital's ear, nose and throat surgeon placed the plate in the teen's jaw, and the dentist placed a wire ligature to keep the teeth safe while the jaw heals. Six weeks later, examination showed that the teenager was recovering and the wire ligature was removed. According to the doctor, the teenager still has no teeth, although he hopes to get implants. After this incident, he quit smoking.

In an interview, Dr. Russell emphasizes that nicotine is harmful in any case, especially for the developing brain. In addition, as it turns out, e-cigarettes can explode, causing serious damage to health. The article does not disclose data on the brand of the electronic cigarette, as well as on the cause of the explosion.

It should be noted that this is not the first such case. For example, in February of this year, an American was killed when an electronic cigarette exploded and severed an artery in his brain. A similar accident happened last year in Florida. The problem stems from the volatile lithium-ion batteries used in these devices. A report from the US Fire Department showed that between 2009 and 2016, at least 195 fires could be attributed to e-cigarette explosions. 133 of them resulted in injuries.
