The woman who had her fallopian tubes removed gave birth to a healthy and viable baby. Only three such cases have been reported in the medical literature, but this is the first healthy birth, doctors told Good Morning America.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the pregnancy rate in women with partial tubalctomy is about 7.5 per 1000. But there is no conclusive data on women who become pregnant after complete tube removal.

Elizabeth Kough of Kearney, Missouri, had a bilateral salpingectomy in 2015 - she removed the fallopian tubes that connect the ovaries to the uterus. This operation, an almost 100% reliable method of contraception, was performed in Virginia. The woman decided to have her fallopian tubes removed for several reasons. First, to reduce the risk of developing ovarian cancer, which cases in her family. Secondly, she is already 35 years old, and at this age pregnancy becomes more risky. Third, she was divorced and had three children.

However, Elizabeth got pregnant last year. Since her home pregnancy test came back positive, she immediately went to a local hospital, where a blood test and ultrasound scan confirmed the pregnancy. In most of these cases, the fertilized egg is attached outside the uterus (ectopic pregnancy), but the baby has developed inside the uterus.

Despite the high risk, the pregnancy was uneventful. Benjamin was born by caesarean section at Kansas City North Hospital, weighing 7 pounds and 6 ounces (about 3kg 350g). The team of doctors checked and confirmed during labor that the fallopian tubes were removed and that the pregnancy did not occur as a result of IVF.

Elizabeth Kof's doctors at Meritas Health in Kansas City could not find an exact explanation. A 2007 article in the Singapore Medical Journal argued that in some women, after bilateral salpingectomy, the area where the fallopian tube was previously connected to the uterus may not close completely. In very rare cases, the egg can pass through the space between the ovary and the uterus ("transperitoneal migration") and reach this opening just at the right time

Dr. Dawn Heizman, an obstetrician from Meritas Health, who was not Elizabeth's primary care physician, but reviewed the case, said none of them had experienced this before. Information about the first case of pregnancy after removal of both fallopian tubes appeared in English-language journals in 2005, the second in 2008. However, the current case is the only one where pregnancy resulted in the birth of a healthy and viable child.

“The fact that Elizabeth gave birth to a healthy baby boy under all these very rare circumstances is like a miracle. It was impressive,”said Dr. Dawn Heizman.

Elisabeth Coff's older children, who are 17, 11 and 9 years old, are delighted with their younger brother, and her partner is a devoted dad, although she never imagined herself in this role.

“I don't know if he was just a medical miracle and a 1 in a million chance, or if he had to be. But I know that he is definitely special for me and for our family,”the happy mother shared.
