For the study, the researchers used data from 43,722 women from the Sister Study, which examined risk factors for breast cancer and other diseases. The age of the participants was 35-74 years old, they did not suffer from cancer or heart disease, none of them worked at night. “Evolutionarily, we have to sleep at night in a dark place. This is far more important than many realize for a variety of health reasons, "says study author Dale Sandler.

In the study, women were checked for health indicators, and they periodically answered questions. Those who reported sleeping at night with the TV on or with another light source gained at least five pounds over five years, compared to those who slept in the dark. Their risk of obesity increased by 30%.

Sandler says she is confident that the weight gain was not related to the nighttime meal because the analysis took into account factors such as diet, exercise and sleep duration for weight gain.

The authors suggest that the same effect of exposure to light during sleep can be expected in men, but men were not included in this study.

Previously, small studies in animals and humans have linked long-term exposure to light and weight gain. Currently, the mechanism of this phenomenon remains unclear, but scientists suggest that we can talk about a violation of the production of sleep hormones and appetite.
