According to the document, a proton therapy center for the treatment of oncological diseases will appear on the territory of the Kaluga region by 2024. According to the head of Rostec, Sergei Chemezov, the future Proton Therapy Center will be equipped according to the highest technological standards . The total investment in the project will amount to about 12 billion rubles. Proton Therapy Development sro will act as a co-investor. A standard proton therapy center requires the construction of a special building with 3–5 underground floors to install a cyclotron, which generates the proton beam needed to irradiate the tumor.

Today, proton therapy is considered the most accurate and least toxic method of radiation therapy. The advantage of the technique is that protons release their energy exactly at the site of cancer tumor localization, without affecting healthy tissues. It is the most effective treatment for many types of cancer without surgery, especially in the treatment of children.

“The proton center is a very complex mechanism, the full protocol of which has not yet been fully worked out in the world, and the creation of such a center requires an almost individual approach,” said Andrei Kaprin, Director General of the National Medical Research Center of Radiology of the Russian Ministry of Health, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. According to him, specialists from the Czech Republic have received all possible European certificates and have proven the effectiveness of this area over the years. One of the world's leading clinics in this area is located in Prague.

“We have built a full cycle proton treatment center in our country. This, in our opinion, is a very promising method, especially for certain nosologies, and we would like to use the experience of our Russian colleagues to replicate such centers,”said Roman Primula, Deputy Minister of Health of the Czech Republic, who was present at the ceremony.

The first clinical center for proton-beam therapy in Russia and the CIS countries was opened a little over a year ago in St. Petersburg - on the basis of the Medical Institute. Sergey Berezin (MIBS). The design capacity of the Center allows up to 800 people to be treated here annually. However, according to Arkady Stolpner, Chairman of the Board of MIBS, “since this is a very expensive treatment (the total cost of a course of treatment in a proton center is a little less than 2 million rubles), only a few can afford it for their own light”.

In addition to the St. Petersburg Clinical Center, where there are opportunities for comprehensive diagnostics, treatment planning and proton therapy, such treatment is very limited in three other Russian institutions:

at the Center for Proton Therapy at the Medical Radiological Research Center in Obninsk (MRRC). This institution can accept a very small number of patients and not in all localizations (now there is only one cabin where patients with head and neck tumors are treated).

  • At the Physics and Technology Center in the city of Protvino (Moscow Region).
  • In the laboratory of nuclear technologies of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Medical and Technical Complex in Dubna (Moscow Region). The capacity of the center is 100 people per year.
  • In the Center, which will be built in Kaluga, 3-4 cabins are planned and the ability to treat diseases of any organs. In addition, there will be intensive care for critically ill patients and, most importantly, opportunities for treating young children

    Starting from 2020, proton therapy in Russia will be included in the high-tech medical care program financed from the compulsory medical insurance funds. And theoretically, as early as next year, patients from all over the country will be able to come to St. Petersburg for treatment. “It is planned to allocate 5 billion rubles for financing proton therapy in 2020 and 5.5 billion rubles in 2021. Thanks to this, 2 thousand patients will be able to receive treatment annually,”said earlier the head of the FFOMS Natalya Stadchenko.
