The use of mobile dating apps may be associated with an increased risk of using unhealthy weight management techniques. People who use these supplements are more likely to vomit, abuse laxatives and diet pills. The study is published in the Journal of Eating Disorders.
A team of researchers from the School of Public Health. Chana University of Harvard studied data on 1,726 American adults who answered a number of questions online, including dating apps and unhealthy weight management practices over the past year.
“To our knowledge, our study is one of the first to examine the use of dating apps in combination with unhealthy behaviors for weight management. Comparing participants to those who did not use dating apps, we found that app users were significantly more likely to use the six unhealthy weight management techniques. These include: vomiting, using laxatives, fasting, using diet pills, using muscle-building supplements and anabolic steroids,”said Dr. Alvin Tran, lead author of the study.
The authors found that of 1,726 adults, 183 women and 209 men were using dating apps. Compared to those who did not use such applications, women were 2.3-26.9 times more likely to use unhealthy weight management practices and 3.2-14.6 times higher in men.
The most common unhealthy practices were fasting, vomiting, and laxatives. Of those who reported using dating apps, 44.8% (82) of women and 54.1% (113) of men were fasting; 22.4% (41) women and 36.4% (76) men vomited; 24% (44) of women and 41.1% (86) of men reported using laxatives for weight control. Other common practices for unhealthy weight management included the use of diet pills, anabolic steroids, or muscle-building supplements.
