The main objective of the isolation study to simulate a long space flight to the moon is to assess stress factors in a multicultural team in a confined space. At this stage, six crew members from Russia and the United States are participating in the study: three men and three women.

SIRIUS is a joint project of the Institute of Biomedical Problems (IBMP) of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the American National Aeronautics and Space Administration Human Research Program (NASA-HRP) with the broad participation of specialists from Russia, the USA, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Belarus and other countries. Scientific research is carried out in a unique medical and technical ground-based experimental complex (NEC) - a multifunctional experimental base for carrying out model research of space flights. The project program is designed for the period until 2021.

The current stage is the first long-term isolation. Earlier, in 2017, the participants in the experiment were in a short space "flight" for 17 days. A simulated flight to the Moon assumes the well-coordinated work of the crew members to choose a place for the construction of a settlement and a base. Therefore, the main goal of the experiment will be to monitor the mental and physical health of the participants. In addition, the crew will carry out a research program in physiology and psychology to study the effects of confined space isolation on human psychology and physiology and group relationships.

“Ground experiments will help us to work out possible scenarios of deteriorating health of future cosmonauts during long expeditions, and in-depth observations will determine the most informative indicators and methods for prompt diagnosis,” said Galina Vasilyeva, head of the group for the study of bone and metabolic effects of weightlessness at IMBP RAS.

Participants' mood, behavior and mental performance will be assessed using a variety of tools and questionnaires. Comprehensive research will make it possible to accurately, on a quantitative level, answer a number of fundamentally important questions: about planning psychological, social, physiological, medical-sanitary and ergonomic conditions for long-term interplanetary missions.

Throughout the entire stage of the experiment, using the analysis of the biomaterial of the crew members (blood, saliva, urine), instrumental diagnostics and other methods, the impact of stress on their psycho-emotional state, as well as the consequences of prolonged stay in a confined space, will be assessed. The greatest attention will be paid to identifying biomarkers of stress, said Rinat Gimadiev, a representative of the project's medical partner - the laboratory of personalized medicine "LabQuest". In particular, it is planned to evaluate indicators of cortisol in saliva and other biochemical and immunochemical indicators.

Another direction of the experiment is instrumental diagnostics of fatty non-alcoholic liver disease, which can develop against the background of physical inactivity during long space missions. To assess the variability of bone metabolism during the entire experiment, the activity and motor activity of the crew members will be recorded. “The crew will undergo multilevel health monitoring: daily in terms of basic indicators and in-depth monthly monitoring using laboratory and instrumental examination methods,” Vasilyeva said.

Research in the field of space medicine is of significant interest for medicine and healthcare in general, experts say. The results of the experiment will make it possible to introduce new tests and diagnostic methods into medical and laboratory practice to speed up the diagnosis of ordinary people, Gimadiev said.
