In addition to finding a link between a partner's sexual habits and a partner's eating disorder symptoms, the study found that men in these women were more likely to pressure their partners to lose weight.
The study, carried out by scientists at Ohio State University, is published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders.
“We talk a lot about the influence of the media, family and friends on eating disorders, but so far few have tried to determine how the influence of a partner contributes to such problems in a woman,” says Tracy Tylka, professor of psychology and one of the authors of the study.
This work is also the first of its kind to study the influence of partners not on young, but on older women who are more likely to enter into long-term relationships. The women in this study were, on average, 34 years old.
The study participants, 409 American women who are in relationships with men, answered questions to identify symptoms of eating disorders. They were also asked about pressure from the media, partners, friends and family members to lose weight. Women also reported how many hours per week their current or former partner watches porn.
The researchers then analyzed the responses and found a clear link between eating disorders in women, partner pressure, and porn viewing frequency. At the same time, pressure to lose weight from a partner had a much more detrimental effect than similar pressure from other people. Understanding all of these factors can improve prevention and treatment of eating disorders, the researchers said.
The study did not look at the potential differences between women who view pornography with their partners and those whose partners view pornography alone.
