There is a grain of medical truth in the proverb “Eat breakfast yourself, share lunch with a friend, and give dinner to the enemy”. A new German study suggests that skipping breakfast may increase your risk of type 2 diabetes.

After analyzing a total of six studies involving more than 96,000 people (5,000 of them were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes), German scientists found that skipping breakfast even once a week was associated with a 6% increased risk of developing diabetes.

In addition, the risk increased with each additional day without breakfast - up to 55% for people who do not eat breakfast four to five days a week.

Breakfast speeds up the metabolism in the body after a night's sleep and changes the way the body uses sugar: it does not contribute to the formation of fatty deposits, but begins to be used for energy. When sugar passes through the bloodstream, the pancreas starts secreting insulin, which regulates blood glucose levels. Throughout the day, these processes affect the balance of appetite and hunger.

Both types of diabetes interfere with blood sugar control. But with type 2 diabetes, the most common form, the body develops insulin resistance. As a result, blood sugar levels become abnormally high, complications from the cardiovascular system, nerves, eyes and kidneys may develop.

Previous research has shown that obesity is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. However, a meta-analysis of known data has shown that human body mass index is only partially associated with the risk of diabetes in people who do not eat breakfast. This suggests that there are other factors that play a role in the development of the disease. In other words, at any weight, those who do not eat breakfast may face an increased risk of developing diabetes.

Avoiding breakfast is also known to be associated with elevated blood cholesterol levels and increased concentrations of markers of inflammation, which can make the body more insulin resistant.

Breakfast should be balanced, high in fiber and low in sugar and processed meats. Nutritionists recommend oatmeal with milk and fruit, or veggie omelet with whole grain toast. This breakfast is the perfect balance of carbohydrates, vitamins and proteins.
