Irrepressible food cravings or cravings for certain foods can overwhelm any effort to maintain a healthy weight. However, there are several ways to alleviate this problem. Their review was published in Current Opinion in Endocrinology & Diabetes and Obesity
Scientists analyzed 28 studies. Their findings largely support previous findings that dietary changes, certain medications, physical activity, and bariatric surgery can help reduce food cravings.
“Excessive food cravings affect what people eat and their weight, but there are some aspects of our behavior and diet that we can control. Focusing on your food cravings gives you more control over your eating habits,”says Candice Myers, a researcher at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University.
For example, there is one proven way to reduce cravings for certain foods: you need to eat them less often. In other words, it is better not to eat than to eat a little.
“Craving for food is a conditioned reflex that cannot be forgotten. It's not easy to deal with, but it can be done,”says John Apolzan, director of the Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism Laboratory at the Pennington Center.
The researchers also came to some other conclusions regarding food cravings:
Losing weight reduces food cravings.
- Lack of physical activity increases voracity.
- Eating habits and weight gain depend on food cravings for about 11%, more than the genetic factors known today.
- Many obesity medications reduce food cravings.
Different demographic and socioeconomic groups may respond differently to food cravings. However, little is known about these differences so far, so more research is needed in this area.
“Food cravings are an important part of the weight loss problem. It does not explain 100% weight gain because other factors, including genetics and eating behavior, play a role,”says Myers.
