Another heart disease that needs less salt to prevent
Excessive salt intake has proven to be an independent risk factor for atrial fibrillation, a dangerous heart rhythm disorder that threatens heart failure and stroke.

A diet high in salt may increase your risk of developing a common dangerous heart rhythm disorder called atrial fibrillation.
The new study involved 716 middle-aged men and women from Finland, and they were followed up for an average of 19 years. During this period, 74 participants were diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. The results of the study were published in the journal Annals of Medicine.
People with the highest dietary salt content had a higher incidence of atrial fibrillation than those with the lowest salt intake. After adjusting for a number of risk factors (age, body fat, blood pressure and smoking), the researchers found that salt intake was itself associated with the risk of atrial fibrillation.
Scientists point out that we are talking only about the association of these phenomena, this study does not show a causal relationship.
“This study is the first evidence that excessive salt intake, among all other risks to the cardiovascular system, can increase the risk of atrial fibrillation. While further corroborating studies are needed, our results already show that salt should be limited for people at increased risk of atrial fibrillation,”says study author Tero Paakko of the University of Oulu in Finland.
The likelihood of developing atrial fibrillation increases with age, and about 7% of people over the age of 65 suffer from this disease.
“With three quarters of the salt consumed in processed foods, reducing the salt intake of the population can reduce the risk of atrial fibrillation and cardiovascular disease in general,” says Paakko.
